This article was originally published by Connor O’Keeffe at The Mises Institute. Last Saturday, the third so-called “No Kings” protest took place in cities across the US. Left-leaning protestors again took to the streets to show everyone how much they oppose Trump. Going all the way back to 2017, the center-left and progressive opposition to Trump has always been, at best, highly flawed. Because it has rested on the idea that he represents a sharp and unique departure from the governmental status quo. Trump is characterized as a wannabe dictator corrupting what had been a sound democratic system that, while not perfect, was largely mobilizing the federal government to benefit the American people. That was never accurate. The American political system is not, and has never been, designed even with the intention of benefiting the American people. Its purpose, from the beginning, has been to concentrate an ever-increasing amount of power in DC and then, using that power, to transfer as much of the public’s wealth as possible into the pockets of government officials and their well-connected friends. The real problem with Trump has always been that he is not enough of a meaningful departure from this terrible status quo. The reason the political establishment has been…

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday asked U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down and retire effective immediately, a Pentagon official told Military Times. The abrupt move cuts short George’s tenure, which began in September 2023, well before the end of the typical four-year term. The Pentagon intends to replace him with a leader aligned with Hegseth and President Donald Trump’s vision for the Army, the official added. They did not specify what this vision entails. George has nearly four decades of military service, according to the Army. He was commissioned as an infantry officer from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1988 and served in the Gulf War, with subsequent deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq.Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said that the current vice chief of staff of the Army, Gen. Christopher LaNeve, will replace George on an interim basis. Parnell asserted that LaNeve is “a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience and is completely trusted by Secretary Hegseth to carry out the vision of this administration without fault.” The Department of Defense said it “has nothing further to provide at the moment.” Since taking office, Hegseth has fired over a dozen…

The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford returned to sea Thursday after a five-day port call in Split, Croatia, the service announced. The stop, which followed a brief visit to Naval Support Activity Souda Bay in Crete, comes as the Navy’s largest carrier has been plagued by maintenance issues that interrupted the ship’s participation in combat operations against Iran. A non-combat fire in the ship’s laundry room on March 12 injured multiple sailors, caused smoke-related issues among hundreds of personnel and damaged 100 sleeping berths. The Ford has also experienced well-documented issues with its plumbing system, with the carrier’s water transport and disposal vacuum causing repeated clogs among the ship’s 650 toilets. The release did not specify whether the Ford would be returning to combat operations as part of Operation Epic Fury. “Gerald R. Ford remains poised for full mission tasking in support of national objectives in any area of operation,” the release stated. The ship has now been deployed for more than nine months, having departed from its homeport of Norfolk, Virginia, on June 24, 2025. It has conducted operations in the Arctic Circle, Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea during that span. Speaking Tuesday at the Center…

MoreThe Office of the Director of National Intelligence released its annual threat report Wednesday, outlining the broader intelligence community’s assessment of dangers to the U.S. and its interests and military installations abroad. In remarks to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard focused heavily on the threat of foreign terror groups with Islamist ideology to the U.S. and to “Western civilization.” The phrase, while absent from recent threat reports, “fits the broader approach the administration has taken to U.S. allies in Europe, which is arguing that the threat is to Western civilization from immigrants,” according to Daniel Byman, director of the Warfare, Irregular Threats and Terrorism Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.“The spread of Islamist ideology, in some cases led by individuals and organizations associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, poses a fundamental threat to freedom and foundational principles that underpin Western civilization,” Gabbard said Wednesday. “Islamist groups and individuals use this ideology for recruiting and financial support for terrorist groups and individuals around the world, and to advance their political objectives of establishing an Islamist caliphate which governs based on Sharia [law].” The report highlights the risks posed by Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia…

It would be hard to find two more complementary market sectors than firearms and tactical knives. As a case in point, I imagine you’re likely reading this article simply because you’re the kind of person who appreciates a quality tool in whatever form it takes. Similar to what drives the engineering teams at Springfield Armory, there’s no shortage of knifemakers who go to bed and wake up thinking about how to create a product people can stake their lives on. According to the author, there isn’t a bad choice in Cold Steel’s knife catalog. Just about everything the company manufactures is durable and offers excellent cutting performance. If one is going to talk about the leaders of the knife industry, the discussion is incomplete without mentioning Lynn C. Thompson, Cold Steel’s CEO. “Larger than life” is a good way to describe the man. In fact, the first page of YouTube results under his name will reveal Thompson’s personal knife recommendations for a variety of uses, a documentary of his own personal training sessions, and his use of a big-bore handgun to stop a charging Australian Buffalo at near-contact distance.
