“Bittersweet.”That’s the shorthand the Navy uses to indicate a potential friendly fire situation. But in the minutes before midnight Zulu time on Dec. 21, 2024, it was already too late to make the call and avert the disaster by the time commanders saw it coming.According to a command investigation published this month into the events that led to the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg shooting down an F/A-18 Super Hornet from the nearby carrier Harry S. Truman and narrowly missing taking out another, a rapid series of missteps — and a long pattern of rushed training and failed equipment — contributed to the embarrassing and costly error. The 152-page investigation, released as part of a package of probes into mishaps on the Truman deployment that included a collision and an arresting wire failure, found the friendly-fire incident was entirely avoidable and caused by established patterns of miscommunication and oversights. From 11:25-11:26 p.m., while the Truman conducted flight operations in the Red Sea, the Gettysburg fired two SM-2 surface-to-air missiles at the two friendly Super Hornets, hitting the first and causing the pilots to eject, and missing the second. U.S. service members will receive a 3.8% pay increase beginning Jan. 1 under the final version of the annual defense bill announced by the House and Senate on Sunday night. The proposed fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act makes several changes to Defense Department personnel policy, including a 3.8% across-the-board military pay raise consistent with the Trump administration’s proposed budget request, as well as personnel policy alterations designed to improve troops’ quality of life. Under the bill, service members with families not only will receive a pay raise, they also will get more money each month when they deploy or are separated from their families for 30 days or more for training or other reasons. The legislation increases family separation allowance from $250 to $300 per month. RELATEDIt also allows expecting parents to use their parental leave within two years after the birth or adoption of a child and aims to make improvements to military and family housing. “We’re pleased to announce that the House and Senate Armed Services Committees have reached a bipartisan, bicameral agreement on the FY26 NDAA that supports service members and strengthens our national defense,” chairmen and ranking members of the House and Senate Armed Services…
Something’s fishy about this knife – and it’s the name. The Dace is a new Boker Plus flipper from returning design collaborator Joe Mangiafico, hitting a sub-$100 price point and delivering a solid suite of everyday carry specs. This is not the first time a knife has been named after a marine creature, but it’s probably the first time that the humble dace has been so honored. To be honest, it’s not the most visually inspiring of fish – more or less just your average-looking specimen, but evidently a fish that is a favorite of anglers, particularly in Europe where the dace is a native species. And, wouldn’t you know it, Mangiafico is himself an angler. The clip’s ano matches that on the pivot. He created a knife much more striking than its inspiration, with a clean ‘n’ mean drop point, with a 2.87-inch length and a stylin’ swedge that runs across the spine before meeting some finger jimping a little past the halfway point up there. Opened solely via flipper (much like a fish), the Dace’s blade is made from Nitro-V, a reliable modern stainless that sits comfortably in the upper echelons of non-super steel performance. The handle is…
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! The White House is turning up the heat on former President Joe Biden’s economic record as voters voice their discontent with current cost-of-living woes that President Donald Trump campaigned to bring down after his economic successes in his first term. “Putting an end to Joe Biden’s inflation and affordability crisis has been a Day One priority for President Trump,” White House spokesman Kush Desai told Fox News Digital Monday morning when asked about the White House message on affordability. “Every Trump administration official has been playing their part over the past year to deliver on this priority, from slashing costly regulations to securing historic drug pricing deals — efforts that have cooled inflation and raised real wages,” he continued. “Much work remains, but President Trump is highlighting the meaningful progress that his Administration has made and will continue to make to turn Joe Biden’s economic disaster around.” The Trump administration is facing a crisis over its economic messaging as Democrats increasingly, and effectively, lean into their message of “affordability” that helped deliver a series of election wins during the off-season cycle in November. MoreAs the inexorable march of progress continues across the firearms industry, the proliferation of red-dot sighting systems has expanded to shotguns as well. While those who shoot upland birds and clays may not wish to partake, there’s clear advantages for tactical and other hunting applications. Despite the recent push to mount optics on rifles ever higher and higher, shotguns remain best employed with a natural mount, low on the gun. But the typical mounting options on shotguns — such as an optic mounted on a Picatinny rail mounted on the receiver — result in a sight that’s quite high, ruining your natural mount and often requiring a raised comb. Mossberg’s new shotguns with an optic cut very low on the receiver are a notable exception. Large buttons on top are very easy to activate. Tucked away in Jacksonville, Florida, lies a collection of automobiles that tell the story of the development of the automobile using racing technology. With 16,000 feet of display space, a theater, a conference room, and a complete workshop, three centuries of automobiles form an unforgettable interactive experience. THE BRUMOS STORY The Brumos journey started in 1953 when Hubert Brundage became a Volkswagen importer in Jacksonville under the name Brundage Motors. Since the high-tech communication system was the teletype machine at the time, Brundage abbreviated Brundage Motors to Brumos for teletype use. The name stuck, and Brumos eventually became the dealership’s name. Interestingly enough, many claimed to be close friends of “Mr. Brumos,” which made it easy to identify the posers. In 1959, Brumos added Porsche to its stable and became the most famous Porsche dealership in U.S. history. While many would be content with selling cars, Brumos went on to race Porsches with the logo “We Race What We Sell” on their vehicles. Photos by Kenda Lenseigne I first met Tom in 2011 at the MGM Ironman 3-gun match, a legendary, high round count blast fest in the Idaho desert. We bullsh*tted between stages, hit it off, and the bromance continues to this day. At the time, he’d just returned from a deployment, and was 230 pounds of tattoos and hate, the archetypal Special Forces senior NCO who’d been blown up twice and shot once, recovering and returning to duty each time. Evidently, the only thing that could kill Tom … was Tom. Fast-forward a couple of years and we ran into each other at some firearms industry event or other. He’d lost 60 pounds and was moving like a 90-year-old-man. “What’s wrong with you, dude?” I asked. “That’s the trouble,” he replied. “No one knows.” If you’ve ever seen someone waste away in front of your eyes, you know what a punch to the gut it can be, and I was pretty sure I was going to be shopping for a new dark suit and black tie in the next couple of months. Fortunately, at that same Idaho 3-gun match was EJ Redding, who became part of the Tom circle. EJ is…
