In situations where battlefield medical care becomes overwhelmed during heavy combat, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is looking toward a future in which robot medics tend to casualties. The agency envisions swarms of robots linking up to drag wounded personnel to safety. They would also inject lifesaving drugs and even shapeshift themselves to form splints around broken limbs, according to a DARPA Small Business Innovation Research solicitation. The goal is to create an “autonomous, self-deploying, wound assessing, swarm-capable, self-linking, mobile robotic solution to assist reaching and moving casualties and perform life-saving interventions at the point-of-need,” the solicitation states. The deadline is June 3. The current battlefield medical system may have worked for the small-unit counterinsurgency warfare of recent years, but it can’t handle casualties from big-unit warfare. “Future Large Scale Combat Operations predict massive casualty incidents, delayed evacuation, and insufficient capacity of the medical system,” DARPA noted. Delayed battlefield medical treatment results in a “high chance of dying due to lack of hemorrhage control which is the leading cause of potentially survivable death in both battlefield and civilian trauma cases prehospital.” The question is whether robots can stop the bleeding. “We believe this is achievable due to the…

With a flurry of new research projects, the Pentagon is exploring multiple ways of improving medical care for wounded military dogs. These efforts include better assessment of canine traumatic brain injury, protecting dogs against toxic chemicals, performing transfusions on bleeding dogs and even finding common medical treatments for both humans and dogs. The new initiatives also come amid reports of poor health conditions for dogs in military base kennels. The latest round of DoD Small Business Innovation Research solicitations included four canine health projects. Three came from the Defense Health Agency and the fourth from DARPA. The deadline for all of them is June 3. One DHA solicitation addresses widespread TBI among military dogs who perform tasks such as detecting explosives or guarding bases. “TBI in the MWD [military working dog] carries an extremely high mortality rate with a prehospital mortality of over 40% for severe TBI cases,” DHA said. “It is estimated that 25% to 40% of all MWD trauma cases are accompanied by TBI, but there is limited data concerning the short- and long-term effects of TBI on the performance and health of the MWD.” DHA wants to take advantage of previous research into TBI on “rodents, canines,…

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to intensify its attacks on Lebanon. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has now been commanded to increase the strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon to deliver what Netanyahu has described as a “decisive blow” to the armed group. This order is problematic, as it came during the ongoing ceasefire between the Jewish state and the Lebanese government in Beirut. This ceasefire was agreed upon in mid-April after more than a month of fighting and was extended earlier in May. The escalation in obvious violation of the ceasefire could further complicate indirect talks between the United States and Iran. Tehran has already stated that the Israeli military must end its operation against Hezbollah in order for a ceasefire with Washington to be extended. US President Donald Trump previously said Israel should only take “surgical” military action in Lebanon.
