Health care workers helping treat and control the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo are threatening to strike as the hemorrhagic disease continues to spread.  Yesterday, healthcare workers in Ituri issued a 24-hour notice of an impending strike. Those working on the Ebola frontlines said that the working conditions were too poor to continue. They reported unpaid benefits, low wages, and inadequate supplies since the outbreak officially began in May. The DRC Ministry of Health has now confirmed 1,561 cases in the outbreak, with the epicenter in Ituri province and significant transmission in North and South Kivu provinces, as well. Thirty-three of the DRC cases are new, as are 14 of the deaths. Two U.S. Marines were recognized last month for their response in providing emergency aid during a fatal nightclub shooting in Wilmington, North Carolina.Cpl. Johnny Tamayo and Cpl. Emily Martinez, both assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, respectively, for their actions following the June 6 shooting at Unhinged Nightclub, where one person was killed.The Marines had recently returned from a 10-month deployment and were out with friends when gunfire erupted inside the nightclub.Tamayo was upstairs when the shooting began.“As soon as the gunshots rang out, I already knew what they were,” Tamayo said in a release. “I looked down and saw the victim at the bottom of the staircase. The Marine Corps this month announced the creation of a new unit charged with standardizing training, doctrine and tactics for the service’s small drones, sUAS, and counter-small unmanned aerial systems, or C-sUAS. Headquartered out of Twentynine Palms, California, the Marine Corps Robotics Integration Group, or MCRIG, will lead the service’s efforts to develop curriculum and integrate points of instruction for small drone warfare. According to a Corps announcement, MCRIG is slated to focus on two types of cUAS: Group 1 drones, which the service defines as sUAS weighing less than 20 pounds and typically operate below 1,200 feet at speeds less than 100 knots; and Group 2 drones, which weigh between 21 and 55 pounds and typically operate below 3,500 feet at speeds less than 250 knots. “The MCRIG, as the Marine Corps lead for Group 1 and Group 2 sUAS and C-sUAS training, education, and curriculum development, standardizes service-wide training efforts, institutionalizes POIs, and facilitates delivery across designated Regional Hubs in order to increase readiness and integrate emerging capabilities throughout the Marine Corps Total Force,” the service said in the announcement.
