United States President Donald Trump claimed that neutral vessels that have been stranded since the beginning of the war with Iran will be guided through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said that the US will facilitate this process, called Project Freedom, and touts it as a humanitarian effort. Ebrahim Azizi, the head of the Iranian parliament’s national security commission, has already dismissed this idea as one of Trump’s “delusional posts,” saying any intervention in the strait would constitute a violation of the ceasefire. Safe passage through the vital waterway has been limited since Iran closed the Strait soon after the US and Israel launched joint attacks on the country on February 28th. Since then, the US has created its own blockade of sorts on Iranian ports, keeping certain ships out. An estimated 2,000 vessels have been trapped in and around the strait since Iran closed the waterway to most traffic in response to the US-Israeli bombing campaign, according to a report by RT. “For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these countries that we will guide their ships safely out of these restricted waterways, so that they can freely and ably get…

Editor’s note: This is a developing story. Two U.S.-flagged merchant ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command said on Monday as Iranian media circulated claims that the country had struck an American warship. CENTCOM quickly denied reports, stating that no U.S. naval vessels had been struck. Tehran earlier said it had forced a U.S. warship to divert away from the strait, Reuters reported, adding that a senior Iranian official said that Iran had fired a warning shot and it was was not clear if that shot damaged the ship. President Trump on Sunday announced “Project Freedom,” a U.S. effort to guide ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a “humanitarian gesture” amid the conflict.Eve Sampson is a reporter and former Army officer. It’s rare that guns based upon classic military firearms don’t trigger (pun intended) some sort of reaction among gun enthusiasts. One of these is the U.S. Military’s M14, brought to the eager hands of civilian shooters by Springfield Armory 50 years ago as the legendary M1A, with many variants offered since. In my opinion, the most striking is the M1A Tanker, inspired by the prototype T26 Tanker Garand. The Springfield Armory M1A Tanker is a perfect, modern brush gun. It offers accurate, powerful shots with fast follow-up shots. This shorter version of the original rifle, with its iron sights and wooden furniture, and chambered in the potent .308 Winchester, screams “brush gun” to me. Let’s see how this rifle fits into that category. What Is a Brush Gun? While there are many “gun categories”, with each filling a more-or-less specific set of requirements, brush guns arguably fall into a rather flexible category. Brush guns don’t have a precise definition or a clear set of specifications that make them what they are — as opposed to, for example, the well-defined “scout rifle” from Col. Jeff Cooper. However, there is a broad understanding of what a good brush gun should be. It…

This article was originally published by George Ford Smith at The Mises Institute. In 1901, on far-away Balangiga—a village in Eastern Samar of the Philippines—an American general gave an order that stripped away any notion of “civilizing” or “Christianizing” a foreign people: “Make it a howling wilderness.” General Jacob H. Smith’s command—accompanied by the instruction to “kill everyone over ten”—was not an aberration. It was consistent with a decision made only a few years earlier about America becoming one of the “great” nations. The government would abandon its anti-imperial tradition and join the ranks of empire. The events at Balangiga were recorded but not broadcast—the public today knows nothing about it. After months of occupation, abuses by American troops—including arrests, food deprivation, and humiliation of the local population—provoked a surprise Filipino attack on September 28, 1901 that killed 74 men of Company C, 9th US Infantry Regiment, “who were stationed in Balangiga to keep its small port closed and prevent any trading.” The American response was swift and total. Villages were burned, civilians killed, and Balangiga was reduced, in Smith’s words, to a “howling wilderness.” Smith was court-martialed—not for murder, but for “conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline.”…
