Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has warned that artificial general intelligence, or AGI, could arrive within the next decade. With it, there could be “catastrophic outcomes”. Some of the catastrophes Hassabis warned of could be cyberattacks on energy or water infrastructure. Ruling classes could use HGI to destroy necessary infrastructure, eliminating human beings without the need for war. Speaking at the Axios AI+ Summit in San Francisco last week, Hassabis described AGI as a model that exhibits “all the cognitive capabilities” of humans, including inventive and creative abilities, according to a report by RT.  He also argued that current large language models remain “jagged intelligences” with gaps in reasoning, long-term planning, and continual learning. However, he suggested that AGI could soon become a reality with continued scaling and “one or two more big breakthroughs.” However, Hassabis did say that the period leading up to AGI is likely to include tangible risks and “catastrophic outcomes,” such as cyberattacks on energy or water infrastructure. “That’s probably almost already happening now… maybe not with very sophisticated AI yet,” he said, calling this the “most obvious vulnerable vector.” He added that bad actors, autonomous agents, and systems that “deviate” from intended goals all require serious mitigation. “It’s non-zero,” he said of the possibility…

We Knife Co. is set to drop their first collaboration piece with designer Sam Tran in the near future. It’s called the Ryson, and it makes a statement with its characterful blade and cool utilitarian styling. Even before you see the blade, learning that the Ryson has a cutting edge of 3.33 inches should make you think “EDC,” and that certainly seems to be the gist with Tran’s first We Knife Co. piece. The blade, which memorably combines elements of drop point, reverse tanto, and harpoon-style profiles, makes an impression without coming across as outre or needlessly complicated. There’s a semi-flowthrough design on the Ryson Indeed, with an edge that is almost all belly, all-purpose slicing seems like a particular strong suite for the Ryson, and that is a type of cut that comes up a lot in the day-to-day category. Performance is underwritten as usual over at We Knife Co. by M390 blade steel. This is certainly not the newest super steel on the market, now arguably two generations behind the absolute frontier of metallurgy, but in role this is still an excellent choice for a premium utility folder. In the handle design arena Tran reigned it in, opting…

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived in Puerto Rico on Monday as the U.S. steps up its military operations against drug cartels in the Caribbean.Their arrival in the U.S. territory comes more than a week after ships carrying hundreds of U.S. Marines deployed to Puerto Rico for a training exercise, a move that some on the island have criticized.RELATED“We thank President Trump and his administration for recognizing the strategic importance of Puerto Rico to U.S. national security and for their fight against drug cartels and the narco-dictator Nicolás Maduro,” González said.Hegseth and Caine met with officials at the 156th Wing Muñiz Air National Guard Base in Carolina, a city just east of the capital of San Juan.González said Hegseth spoke to nearly 300 soldiers at the base and thanked those he described as “American warriors” for their work. The visit comes as the U.S. prepares to deploy 10 F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico for operations targeting drug cartels, a person familiar with the planning said Saturday. This article was originally published by Laurent Thynes at The Mises Institute.  New Yorkers appear to be on the cusp of electing a self-described socialist, Zohran Mamdani, as their next mayor. At first glance, his youth-friendly marketing comes off as rather gimmicky, as do some of his policy recommendations, such as free public buses and state-provided baby baskets. But make no mistake, his core agenda forms perhaps the most heavily interventionist platform the city has ever witnessed, and his proposed price controls could very swiftly bring about the return of the misery of the 1970s. $30 Minimum Wage by 2030 His platform states, “As Mayor, Zohran will champion a new local law bringing the NYC wage floor up to $30/hour by 2030.” Minimum wage laws are a form of price floor on wages, which outlaw the contractual exchange of labor for money at any price below said floor and, as basic economics teaches us, a floor above an equilibrium price creates a glut or unemployment. Employee compensation (including wages, benefits, and other intangible, employment-related advantages) is determined by the supply of substitute laborers and the demand for that type of labor by entrepreneurs engaged in the ventures that require them. Through the effects of negotiation and competition, worker remuneration constantly tends towards the discounted marginal value product they…

Micah Parsons’ Green Bay Packers debut was a successful one, as he helped disrupt the Detroit Lions’ offense in the 27-13 win to open the season, securing his first sack in the process.Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones, the son of owner Jerry Jones, was asked during an appearance on Dallas sports talk radio station 103.5 The Fan about the Parsons trade, specifically Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer’s Sunday report. Glazer said the Philadelphia Eagles, the Cowboys’ division rival they lost to in Week 1, had a stronger trade offer for Parsons.Jones shot down any talk about Parsons, including what occurred at Lambeau Field on Sunday. “That’s all in our rearview mirror,” Jones said, via The Athletic. “All we’re worried about is our future. We’re worried about Kenny Clark and what the future holds for the Dallas Cowboys. What happened in the past is in the past. We need to win a football game.”Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer did, however, acknowledge what Parsons did against the Lions.MICAH PARSONS’ FIRST PACKERS SACK LEAVES EX-COWBOYS TEAMMATE TREVON DIGGS IN DISBELIEF: ‘THIS CAN’T BE REAL'”I saw him running around out there. Construction is underway on what’s billed as a “first-of-its-kind” barracks designed to significantly improve the quality of life for junior unaccompanied service members at Fort Irwin, California. The privatized barracks project, slated for completion in April 2028, will replace existing barracks with 276 modern apartment units in three-story buildings, designed to house 545 service members. The project marks a pilot program “with the potential to reshape junior unaccompanied housing across the Army,” Army officials said in an announcement about the groundbreaking ceremony held Friday. It’s a partnership between the Army and The Michaels Organization, a partner in military privatized housing since 2004.The new Fort Irwin Apartments will feature two-bedroom, two-bathroom units with shared kitchens. Community amenities will include a pool, a clubhouse with TVs, a kitchenette, a covered patio with seating, lounge chairs and grassy areas. “This is the bellwether for what we can do for our soldiers, not just here at Irwin, but across the Army,” said David H. Dentino, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for installations, housing and partnerships, in the announcement. Officials said the project helps address the needs of service members training at the National Training Center, “where demanding rotations require comfortable and restorative living…

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! President Donald Trump’s push to establish “America’s global AI dominance” could run into friction from an unlikely source: the “effective altruism” movement, a small but influential group that has a darker outlook on artificial intelligence.Trump signed an executive order earlier this year titled, “Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence.” This week he met with top technology industry leaders, including Mark Zuckerburg, Bill Gates and others, for meetings at the White House in which AI loomed large in the discussions. However, not all the industry’s leaders share the president’s vision for American AI dominance. Jason Matheny, a former senior Biden official who currently serves as the CEO of the RAND Corporation, is a leader in the effective altruism movement, which, among other priorities, seeks to regulate the development of artificial intelligence with the goal of reducing its risks. Effective altruism is a philanthropic social movement where proponents claim to be aiming to maximize the good they can do in the world and give to what they calculate are the most effective charities and interventions. Part of this movement includes powerful donors from across many sectors, including technology, where funds are poured into fighting…
